Gambling 101 – The difference between a 10 cent line and Money lines

We at BettorsNet.com® give you all the required tools in order to control all the action going on. As well we got some of the betting terms so that our clients will learn more on how to bet on sports.

For example, for gambling beginners money lines can regularly appear to be quite stately, but when the basics behind money lines are understood, they are just as easy, to use as the point spread. Whereas the point spread is concerned with who wins and by how much, the money line is only interested in who wins.

A money line can be used with all traditional sports and just about anything else you can wager on. In other way, the money line defines the amount of money laid and the amount of money won when wagering on either the favorite or the underdog. The highest negative money line determines the favorite team, and the lowest negative money line and all positive money lines determine the underdog.

It’s vital to remember that even though money lines are stated in units of $100, the bettor do not have to bet that much money. The money line will work just as easily with a $10 or $5 bet as it does with a $100 wager. For example, if you want to bet on the favored team, the White Sox, you have to bet $1.20 for every $1 you want to win. If you want to bet on the underdog Astros, you have to bet $1 for every $1.10 you want to win.

On the other hand, the term dime line (10 cent) comes from the spread between favorites and underdog’s only being “10 cents”. If the favorite is -140 and the underdog is +130 the difference is 10, so the bet you are getting your odds from is using dime lines. If the difference between the lines is more than 10, it is called a wide line. Most bookies offer a dime line; although it can increase to a 20 cent line or greater if one team is heavily favored.

There are other important wager terms to know about for bettors.

  • Straight Bet: Straight bets are perhaps the most common type of sports wager. These wagers are usually in a single game that carries a point-spread, money line or game total. To win a straight bet you must properly choose the team that will cover the spread, or be assertive to choose if the score of the game will be over or under a certain amount.
  • Proposition: Proposition is a bet made on a very specific outcome of a match. Examples include guessing the number of goals each team scores in a handball match, betting whether a player will score in a football game, or wagering on the number of hits a specific baseball will do.
  • Parlay: Parlays are the most popular of the unusual wagers, as they offer the possible for a big payoff from a small bet. In other words, a parlay is a single wager that is composed or two or more individual bets and is reliant on all of those wagers winning together. The advantage of the parlay is that there are much higher remunerations than choosing each individual bet separately since the striving of hitting it more difficult. If any of the bets in the parlay lose, the entire parlay loses. But if any of the plays in the parlay ties, or pushes the parlay reverts to a lower number of teams with the odds dropping consequently and you win some.
  • Teaser: A teaser is a bet that allows the gambler to combine his bets on two different games. The bettor can modify the point spreads for the two games, but realizes a lower return on the bets in the event of a winner. The teasers are more commonly offered in football and basketball and are quite similar to parlays, in that all of the teams selected must win in order for a bettor to win their wager.
  • Future bet: The future wagers are by definition on future events, listed as a bet that has a long-term (in weeks or months); for example, a bet that a certain NFL team will win the Super Bowl for the upcoming season. However, this bet has to be chose before the season starts and will be payoff when that event concludes.
