Last Saturday at the Belmont Park race track in New York, tens of thousands of horse racing enthusiast gathered to witness what was expected to be the crowning of the first Triple Crown winner in almost four decades. But, time would tell a different story as the favorite to win the race, California Chrome failed in his attempt to achieve the triple tiara.

It was just impossible not to be disappointed at the fact California Chrome arrived in fourth position while Tonalist, Commissioner and Medal Count (Win, Place, Show) were first, second and third place respectively. The tension arose as California Chrome co-owner Steve Coburn made a harsh statement heavily criticizing those newcomers that skipped the first two legs of the Triple Crown.

“That’s the coward’s way out,” he said. “It’s not fair to these horses that have been in the game since day one. If you don’t make enough points to get into the Kentucky Derby, you can’t run in the other two races. It’s all or nothing.”

California Chrome´s Jockey Victor Espinoza said the chestnut colt was not the same from the very moment he was taken to the gate. At the track while running California Chrome was not responding and he seemed clearly wore out.

On the other hand, Belmont Stakes winner Tonalist was pretty rested and ready for the longest run of the three races. The colt becomes part of the long list of Triple Crown spoilers. Here is a couple of quick videos on those moments of action at Belmont Park last Saturday afternoon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGaNCWZLyWc

The following are the race betting payouts:

Win Place Show

Tonalist $20.40 $9.60 $7.00

Commissioner — $23.20 $13.20

Medal Count — — $13.20

Furthermore, after a couple of days of high controversy aside the win of Tonalist at the Belmont Stakes due to the strong comments made by California Chrome´s co-owner Steve Coburn, he made a public appearance at the Good morning America show and sincerely apologized for having called the other horses´owners “cheaters”.

Coburn´s was clearly trying to make a statement that only three horses in this race ran in the first two — California Chrome, Ride on Curlin and General A Rod and all horses participating in the Triple Crown should run in all three races and not just one.
