One of the top horse races in the world, the Breeders Cup first showdown began this Friday at the beautiful and well-known Santa Anita Park race track located in Arcadia, California. Santa Anita´s course type is for thoroughbred flat racing with a one-mile (1,609 m) natural dirt main track which rings a turf course measuring 9/10 of a mile, or 7 furlongs plus 132 feet (1,448 m).

In addition, it has an unusual hillside turf course which crosses the dirt and is used mainly to run turf races at a distance of “about” 6½ furlongs (exact distance 64½ feet [19.7 m] less than same, or 1,288 m). source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Anita_Park

“It’s unprecedented. No track has held this race more than twice in a row,” spokesman Brian Robin said. “It’s really a feather in our cap.” “You’re going to expect probably one of the greatest horse racing fields you‘re ever going to see,” Robin added.

Not really a surprise today’s winner at Santa Anita Park was the favorite Untapable ridden by jockey Rosie Napravnik. Napravnik, 26, announced she will be retiring due to her pregnancy while being interviewed in the winner’s circle after Untapable won the Distaff by 1 1/4 lengths over Don’t Tell Sophia and third-place Iotapa, who were in a photo finish for second.

Trained by Steve Asmussen, Untapable went off at 3-2 odds and was running a comfortable fifth as the horses raced down the backstretch. Untapable became the race’s favorite after Beholder, which won last year’s Distaff, was scratched two weeks ago because of a fever. source: http://www.latimes.com/
