The 139th edition of the Kentucky Derby took place this past Saturday at Chuchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky bringing lots of action and a pretty unexpected surprise.
Orb, the bay Colt splashed through the slop winning the race; this is Shug McGaughey Orb´s trainer first triumph in the 3-year-old classic. Kentucky Derby winner Orb, ran the 1 1/4 miles in 2:02.89 time.
It was just amazing to see how this horse that was in 16th pole position broke from the pack and got into striking position, as jockey Joel Rosario managed to keep him calm and run faster. ”He was very relaxed, it’s exactly what I wanted,” Rosario said.
Some of the Kentucky betting odds showed Orb as a 5 to 1 favorite and paid $12.80, $7.40 and $5.40 (win, place & show). While second place Golden Soul (34-1) paid $38.60 and $19.40 (place & show); followed by Revolutionary that came in third and Normandy Invasion in fourth place.
The Triple Crown races continue on May 18th as the Preakness awaits for the most famous and fastest horses in the United States. The official list of contenders is not yet confirmed but these five runners are considered strong candidates to challenge Orb at the Preakness. Their names are: Myute (5th), Oxbow (6th), Will Take Charge (8th), Itsmyluckyday (15th) and Goldencents (17th).
