The 146th edition of the Belmont Stakes, the last race of the Triple Crown will be taking place this coming June 7th at Belmont Park in New York as the expectations are high on the subject whether there will be a new Triple Crown winner this year.
The beautiful colt named California Chrome has won the first two races; his first win came at the Kentucky Derby where he surprised every single spectator then striking back at the Preakness Stakes while making his way in horse racing history.
California Chrome´s main challenge is coming ahead, as there is a long list of highly competitive contenders this talented low-profile bred colt will have to face in order to be crowned the 12th Triple Crown winner and get a purse of approximately $1.5 million.
Some of the horses managed to arrive in second and third positions at the previous races, but are now ready to push harder. Some of the contenders that have already confirmed their entries are: Commanding Curve, Ride on Curlin, Danza, Wicked Strong, Samraat, Intense Holiday, Social Inclusion, and Kid Cruz just to mention a few.
“We want to congratulate the connections of California Chrome, who has distinguished himself as an elite 3-year-old,” said Martin Panza, NYRA’s Senior Vice President of Racing Operations. “Every one of us at The New York Racing Association looks forward to watching him attempt to make history on June 7. With $8 million in purses and 10 stakes on the card, Belmont Stakes Day already was going to be a fantastic day of racing, and California Chrome’s Triple Crown bid will make the event even bigger.”
On the other hand, and as an important note earlier this month the New York Racing Association, Inc. (NYRA) made an official announcement the Belmont Stakes purse increased from $1 millon to a $1.5 millon or the 146th edition of the race. Both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes pay $2 million and $1.5 million to the winner respectively for this reason it was decided to raise the purse in order to keep all three major races in the status.
As of this week, it has been officially reported that California Chrome has been training at the grounds of Belmont Park. California Chrome is the 13th horse to have won the first two races of the Triple Crown and now it faces two of the toughest contenders and previous races runner-ups Command Curve and Ride On Curlin.
These are some of the betting odds for the Belmont Stakes:
California Chrome 10/13
Ride on Curlin 15/1
Command Curve 8/1
Kid Cruz 20/1
Social Inclusion 12/1
