NFL – Cleveland Browns team facts – History
The Cleveland Browns were established in 1946 in Cleveland, Ohio. They are part of the North Division of the American Football Conference of the NFL. Their name was given to their founder and first head coach Paul Brown. The Browns play their home games at the First Energy Stadium since 1999. Their current owner is Jimmy Haslam.
They were part of the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) and won the championship for the four years that it existed; they continued their success when they became an NFL franchise.
In the first NFL season in 1950 they won the league championship, and later two more in 1954 and 1955. The team then appeared in 10 straight championship games and won seven. They won the Championship again in 1964 and since then their performance has not been the best.
In 1995, Art Modell who purchased the Browns in 1961 decided that he wanted to relocate the team to Baltimore, Maryland. This brought a lot in controversy as the NFL wanted to keep a franchise in Cleveland so they became to an agreement so that Modell was able to take his team to Baltimore, who later on became the Baltimore Ravens, but led the Browns name, colors, logos and history so that they will be able to rebuilt a brand new team that played for the first time in 1999 after 3 years of suspended operations.
The Browns have won 8 League Championships, 11 Conference Championships, 13 Division Championships and have appeared in the playoffs 28 times.
