The Western Athletic Conference covers the western states of the United States and is an American collegiate conference established in July, 1962. After the 2012-13 season, the WAC dropped football as an sponsored sport and it became a non-football conference.
The teams that are part of this conference are listed as: University of Denver, University of Idaho, Louisiana State University, New Mexico State University, San Jose State University, Seattle University, University of Texas at Arlington, University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas State University-San Marcos and Utah State University.
The University of Denver was founded in 1864 and is a private university. They are also known as the pioneers and are moving from the WAC to the Summit League. They have been having athletic teams since 1867. They mostly compete un hockey, basketball and lacrosse. They are a non-football team university.
University of Idaho was established in 1889 as a public university located in Moscow, Idaho. They are also known as the Vandals; they began competing in 1893. They play their home games at the Kibbie Dome since 1971. Idaho is part of the Division I-A officially again since 1997. The Vandals have won 9 Conference Championships when they were part of the Big Sky Conference. They have 2 Bowl appearances.
Idaho was cleared to continue in the FBS as an Independent team, since the WAC became a non-football conference. Their head coach is Paul Petrino.
The Louisiana State University was founded in 1894 in Ruston, Louisiana and started competing in 1901. Their head coach is Skip Holtz and they play their home games at the Joe Aillet Stadium since 1968.They are also known as the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs have won 3 National Championships in their 110 years in football, 25 Conference Championships and have 6 Bowl appearances. In 2013 they will be part of the Conference USA.
New Mexico State University was founded in 1888 in Las Cruces, New Mexico. They started competing in 1893 and they are transitioning to be an independent team since the WAC would become a non-football conference and for 2014 they will become part of the Sun Belt Conference for football only. They are also known as the Aggies and they play their home games at the Aggie Memorial Stadium.
They have won 4 Conference Championships and have appeared in a Bowl game in 3 occasions. Their head coach is Doug Martin.
The San Jose State University also known as the Spartans was established in 1857 as a public school in San Jose, California. They started competing in 1892 and they play their home games at the Spartan Stadium. Their head coach is Ron Caragher.
The Spartans will compete in 2013 a part of the Mountain West Conference after 17 years of being part of the WAC. They have won 16 Conference Championships and have 9 Bowl appearances, the latest in 2012 when they defeated Bowling Green at the Military Bowl.
The Seattle University was founded in 1891 as a private University located in Seattle, Washington. They have eight men’s sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, swimming, soccer, tennis, and track and field, and nine women’s sports: basketball, cross country, golf, swimming, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, and volleyball. They are a non-football University. They are also known as the Redhawks.
The University of Texas at Arlington was established in 1895 in Arlington, Texas. They are also known as the Mavericks and began competing in 1919. They used to play their home games at the Maverick Stadium. The football program was disabled in 1985 when the director cited financial loss as the primary reason to close the program.
They won 3 Conference Championships and had 1 Bowl game appearance.
University of Texas at San Antonio was funded in 1969 as a public university in San Antonio, Texas. They are also known as the Roadrunners. They began competing in the NCAA division I-A in 2010 and they became formally part of the WAC in 2012. Later in 2012 it was announced that they will become part of the Conference USA following its approval from the University Of Texas System Board Of Regents to allow the school to accept an invitation, negotiate and finalize terms with the league. They will become a full FBS for 2014.
The Roadrunners play their home games at the Alamo Dome, which is the home of the Alamo Bowl.
Texas State University was established in 1899 in San Marcos, Texas as a public university. They are also known as the Bobcats and started competing in 1904. They became part of the WAC in 2012 and are also known as the Bobcats. They play their home games at the Bobcat Stadium.
The Texas State University has become the fifth largest university in Texas and as a result they announced they will be moving to the Sun Belt Conference starting in 2013. They have won 2 National Titles and 14 Conference Championships.
The Utah State University was established in 1888 in Logan, Utah. They are also known as the Aggies and started competing in 1892. They play their home games at the Romney Stadium and their head coach is Matt Wells.
The Aggies will join the Mountain West Conference in 2013 after the departure of BYU and Utah. They have won 13 Conference Titles and have 8 Bowl appearances.
