NFL – New Orleans Saints- history and facts
The New Orleans Saints was founded by John W. Mecom, Jr. and David Dixon and the city of New Orleans in 1967.The Saints began playing at Tulane Stadium but now presently they are playing in a more lucrative a bigger one, the Mercedes-Benz Superdome .Today the current owners are Tom Benson and Rita Benson LeBlanc, and the Saints coach is Sean Payton, who returns to the team after serving a one-year suspension for his involvement in the team’s 2012 bounty scandal.
During the first 20 years, the Saints were hardly competitive. However, in 1987 the Saints have their first winning season after finishing 12-3. Also thru that year they qualify for the playoffs for the first time in franchise history.
The following years the Saints have average winning record but by 2000 New Orleans got their first-ever playoff victory by defeating the St. Louis Rams 31-28.
However, it was not until 2009, that the Saints have a historic season. They had a winning franchise-record 13 games; they qualified for Super Bowl XLIV and beat the AFC champion Indianapolis Colts 31-17. Until today, it is the only NFC Championship and the only Super Bowl Championship that they have attained, and as it is the only Super Bowl the Saints have appeared in.
The Saints have also reached 5 division championships (2 NFC West in 1991, 2000 and 3 NFC South in 2006, 2009, 2011), as well they have appeared in 9 playoffs.
Yet, there is a lot to be expected this 2013 season since the Saints didn’t have a good season last year after finished tied for last in the NFC South, with 7-9 record. However, Sean Payton is coming back and the Saints are expecting a better season in hands of Drew Brees and the new acquisitions.
